Beginning in August 2021, the Bowling Green Independent School District will pay full-time bus drivers up to $25 per hour for school day routes, a minimum of four hours per school day. Superintendent Fields recommended the rate change to help recruit and retain the best drivers to safely transport students to and from school each day. The Board of Education voted to increase the rate on Monday, June 14, 2021.
All new bus drivers in BGISD are hired first as substitute bus monitors and paid throughout their training ($10.20 per hour plus benefits). Upon earning the CDL, drivers are paid as either substitute or full time drivers.
New drivers, hired without the CDL and endorsements, will train for 6 to 8 weeks after the background check, drug test, and physical are completed.
New employees with the CDL and endorsements will spend approximately two weeks completing the Kentucky school bus driver curriculum, introductions to BGISD-specific procedures, plus training with a BGISD trainer.
HOURLY RATES: 2021-2022
Drivers with 0 to 4 years experience will be paid $20 per hour for school day routes.
Drivers with 5 to 9 years experience will be paid $22.50 per hour for school day routes.
