In reading, I will be working to enhance your child’s reading skills. We will be reading various forms of literature (genre) this year. Some of our selections will come from the reading textbooks while others will come from student/teacher selected books. Reading homework will be nightly and all assignments must be recorded in the agenda book. Your child is expected to read each night for 20 minutes if a reading assignment is not given. This can come from books, magazines, etc. It will be student choice but they must READ and not just look at the pictures. Students will have tests over the reading selections.
Each grading period this year your child will be required to read at least three(3) accelerated reading books that are on the student’s reading level and pass the AR test on each book scoring at least 80% proficiency. If not, then they will be required to read additional books until the goal is completed. Students will then choose one of the books read and scored 80% and complete an Accelerated Reader Project on it. A list of projects and guidelines is attached. This will be part of the reading grade.
Research shows that students that spend an additional 20 minutes outside of classstime reading inclrease their reading levels by at least one grade equivalent.
Parents may check his/her child's AR reading report at any time through the Reading Renaissance link provided on the 5th grade page.
