Intermediate Mixed Choir, or the BGHS Choristers are learning music skills and developing strong voices. The music chosen for this group consists of folk songs, world music and standard choral repertoire. Goals of this course are for students to develop musicality, be able to breathe and sing healthfully, read music, and sight sing with solfege and Curwen hand signs.
Advanced Women’s Choir, or Bellissima, is a opportunity for women to participate in a competition level group. To be admitted to this group, the students must earn an 80% or above on the Music Literacy Test, demonstrate a commitment to kindness and hard work, and have strong voices. The music is challenging and requires excellent musicians with mature, developed voices. Women in Bellissima should be able to sing their parts independently, read music well, sight sing well, and most importantly, have a positive and focused attitude.
A Cappella Choir is the most advanced group at BGHS. Students are admitted into this group by audition only, after passing the Music Literacy Test with at least an 80%. The repertoire in A Cappella ranges from SATB (4-part) to SSAATTBB (8-part). The music is challenging and requires excellent musicians with mature, developed voices. Students in A Cappella should be able to sing their parts independently, read music well, sight sing well, and most importantly, have a positive and focused attitude. Because this group performs demanding music, it is important that members understand their commitment to this group. This choir requires attendance at many events beyond what is expected of the other choirs. Any student is subject to removal from the group if he/she does not meet the requirements of the group, attend rehearsals and performances, abide by appropriate standards of behavior, or possess the appropriate attitude. A Cappella membership is a privilege; students are expected to respect the group.
Student Contemporary Groups
A CaPurples (SATB) and The Violettes (SSAA)
The Contemporary Groups are audition only and are strictly extra-curricular. Rehearsals will be held throughout the year on most Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons from 3:15-4:30. Auditions are held at the end of the school year for the following year.
BGHS presents a Spring Musical every year and are a strictly extra-curricular activity. You must go through an audition process which includes an initial audition song in the style of the given show. A good audition is the key to getting into the show. If you are hoping for a lead, I suggest you study with a voice teacher. I cast students in all grades and prefer to cast my leads out of kids who have been in my choruses before.
Fundraising for the musical...
There is a production fee required for all cast members which covers the archive DVD of the musical, costumes, cast t-shirt, musicians, props, etc. The $50 production fee should be made out as a check to BGHS. In addition to this fee, there is a fundraising expectation for participating in the musical. All cast members will sell ads to community businesses and individuals. The requested amount of ad sales is $150 per student, or $200 per family.

Be Prompt to Class.
I WILL count tardies if you are late to class. You must be in the door on your way to your seat with your folder in hand when the bell rings.
Come to class with your music and a pencil in order to participate fully in the rehearsal.
Be a team player by bringing your best positive attitude and work ethic to choir. Be someone that others want to look to for leadership.
Participation is what you are graded on daily in choir. Do you use good posture? Are you respectful of others & the director? Do you sing to the best of your ability? Do you participate in ALL required events?
Respect my workspace
Please DON’T go in the Office or Choral Library unless you have permission.
Please DON’T chew gum during rehearsal.
Please DON’T use your phone in class. That will earn you a trip to ALC.
Tardies –It is school policy to turn in a discipline referral for each tardy. I will be following this policy strictly. You must be INSIDE the choir room door when the tardy bell rings.
Upon entering the room – We have a numbered shelf where your binder will be stored. You will be assigned a number. Upon entering the room, you are to get your binder and proceed directly to your seat.
Daily Participation 50 points per week
(Posture, Attitude, Focus, Respect, Effort)
Dress Rehearsals 100 points each
Concerts 200 points each
Other Quizzes to be determined
If your child has to miss a concert for serious illness or other excused absence (must be excused by Mrs. B), there will be an alternate written assessment assigned to display the student’s understanding of the work. If the absence is not excused, the concert will be entered as a “0”. Mrs. Beresford will assign a specific topic and paper length. The paper will be graded for content and writing skill by Mrs. Beresford and the student’s English teacher. Students who miss a concert(s) may lose eligibility to audition for the advanced groups.
Required Materials for Choristers
1” Black Binder with pockets inside the front cover. Make sure the binder is flat black WITHOUT a transparent cover on the front.
Pencils!- I can’t stress this enough. You MUST have a pencil.
Please add student and parent/guardian signatures and return to class by Friday, August 12th. This signature will count as a quiz grade.
We are going to have a great year!
