We LOVE Accelerated Reader in 1st grade!
Each Friday we have AR time for thirty minutes. During this time we join together with Mrs. Walton's and Mrs. Riley's class to read AR books and take AR tests. This is a great opportunity to read with peers outside our classroom, work on reading comprehension, and gain AR points. Students will read books at their own pace and when they are ready take an AR test with a parent volunteer or by themselves.
An AR reading log will also be kept in each child's homework folder. This log is for the parents to record library books and other books that are being read at home that students can take tests on. This is basically a communication form between school and home so I know what tests need to be taken and the parents know how their child is performing on each test.
Every student will be given an individualized AR goal for each quarter. This goal is based on the student's reading leveling and their rate of improvement. The goals are evaluated based on how many points the child receives from taking AR tests. The more tests you take and score well on the more points you earn! At the end of each quarter Mrs. Ogden has a reward for those students that meet their AR goal and their picture goes up outside our door to indicate they are an "AR All-Star."
