SPAN/Pre-AP Chemistry is a first year chemistry course designed to help "span the gap" between high school and college. The program permits high school students to earn credit for WKU Chemistry 105/106. The 105/106 credit is a non-science major course that provides a general science credit for students interested in Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Agriculture, Dietary, and Sports Medicine; the WKU credit does not count toward the required hours for science majors and pre-professional students. Any student interested in receiving dual credit for the course should talk to Mrs. Olson and guidance. All students enrolled in the course will receive college level instruction, but only those that pay the WKU tuition and admission fee ($208 total) will obtain college credit. Since the course is taught at the same level as WKU, it will expose students to a fast-paced college setting with the familiarity of high school. It is recommended that students spend a minimum of 5 hours outside of class for studies per week, complete all homework assignments, form study groups, and utilize resources available. SPAN/Pre-AP Chemistry will also prepare students for AP Chemistry and additional opportunities to obtain college credit.
Any student interested in Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Agriculture, Dietary, Sports Medicine or related fields should also take the semester organic/biochemistry course their senior year. This semester course will earn students college credit for chem 107/108. The combination of the SPAN/PAP and the organic/biochemistry classes will take care of ALL the required chemistry classes for students pursuing the degrees mentioned above.
