BGHS and BGJHS: Regional Speech Champions

Bowling Green High School and Bowling Green Junior High both won the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) Regional Championship in their respective divisions at BGJHS on Saturday. Bowling Green High School Speech and Debate Coach Janet Martin and Bowling Green Junior High’s Forensics Team Coach Shanna Lee were both named Regional Coaches of the year.

KHSSL’s 14 senior division speech events and 3 debate events for 9-12 graders and 12 junior division events for 4th-8th graders allow students to develop skills in public speaking, drama and literature interpretation.

The National Federation of State High School Associations states that, speech and debate, “is and essential opportunity that should be provided to all students,” because  “Most state educational standards . . .require that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life.  Many of those skills are honed in speech and debate participation.”
