Peru Trip Info Meeting: February 8

Upcoming ASVAB Test: February 2

The next ASVAB will be on Friday, February 2 at 8:30 am in the Math Lab. This is an awesome Career Exploration Program whether you are considering the military or not. Hall of Honor: Applications Available Online

The Bowling Green High School Hall of Honor has recognized distinguished graduates since 1992. Honorees include doctors, athletes, community advocates, architects, military personnel, engineers and more. Each member recognized for their outstanding contributions in both personal and professional lives. BGHS Student Performances on Local TV

Bowling Green High School musicians will have performances replayed on local television several times this holiday season. Local Cable Channel 195 will show Concerts at the Courthouse featuring the Bellissima and A Cappella choirs through December 25 and WBKO will air A Hometown Christmas Special on December 24th and 25th, including music from the annual PTO Concert.

Bowling Green High School's Annual Holiday Concert was held December 7, 2017, featuring the school's band, choir, and orchestra. The musicians performed at 9:00 a.m. for Bowling Green Junior High School students and at noon for the school district's fourth and fifth grade students from all five elementary schools. Local television station, WBKO recorded the concert to air December 24th and 25th at 10:00 p.m. 

BGHS Medical Arts Academy Recognized for Business Partnerships Medical Arts Academy Logo

The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce honored 20 businesses with awards Tuesday night, October 24th, at the annual Targeted Business and Industry Banquet. The 2017 Business-Education Partnership Award was awarded to Bowling Green High School, Med Center Health and TriStar Greenview Regional Hospital for their work on the Bowling Green High School Medical Arts Academy.

2018-19 School Calendar Survey

The District Calendar Committee would like your opinions to assist with developing a 2018-19 school calendar. This survey is the first step in the process. A calendar recommendation will be presented for a first reading at the Board of Education on November 13. The calendar will be approved at the December Board of Education meeting, December 11th. 

Please complete this survey by October 27, 2017. 

McKenzi Loid Memorial Internship Offers New Opportunities

A public relations internship at Bowling Green High School is now available for WKU PR students through a private donation in memory of BGHS and WKU PR alumna McKenzi Loid. The interns, one each fall and spring semester, will work at Bowling Green High School with the BGHS Journalism Department with the goal of expanding the program to include public relations principles, as well as providing hands-on professional experience to a future PR professional.

BGHS Construction: Schematic Designs Approved BGHS Schematic Design 2017

Ross Tarrant Architects presented schematic designs to the Bowling Green Board of Education on Monday, October 9, 2017. The computer renderings of the two-phase project include large open spaces and natural light inside the building, and a column design, plus purple-tinted brick on the exterior.

BGHS Celebrates Opening of Medical Arts Academy

Students, faculty, community partners, and elected officials met Friday, September 15, to celebrate the opening of the Bowling Green High School Medical Arts Academy. The mission of the new academy is to develop the next generation of health and fire science professionals, preparing them to implement high-quality and evidence-based care.

Four BGHS Students Named 2018 National Merit Semifinalists Peter Guthrie, Mini Ganesh, Ann Hines, and Hayden Crosby

Officials from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) have announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Four students from Bowling Green High School have received this recognition: Hayden Crosby, Rukmini Ganesh, Peter Guthrie, and Ann Hines.

Calvin Head Hired as Girls Basketball Coach Calvin Head, Lady Purples Head Coach

Bowling Green High School has hired Calvin Head to lead the Lady Purples Basketball Team. Head is a special education teacher in the school’s LEAD Academy and also serves as Assistant Athletic Director.

Construction Budget Approved for Phase One of New BGHS

The Bowling Green Board of Education approved the first step in the Bowling Green High School construction process on August 14, 2017, budgeting $27.8 million for the first of a two-phase project. The school, with the exception of the arena will be completely rebuilt over the next several years.

Class of 2018 ACT Scores Surpass School Averages

ACT, Inc. has released scores from the Bowling Green High School Class of 2018 state assessment. As juniors, the 255 students scored an average composite score of 21.3, the highest for BGHS since all juniors began taking the exam in 2008. The students scores also surpassed state averages in all content areas.

Best wishes to the Bowling Green High School Class of 2017. These young alumni will soon be attending more than 30 post-secondary institutions and joining four branches of the armed forces. Once a Purple, Always a Purple. 

Board of Education Adopts Tax to Support BGHS Construction & Renovation Bowling Green High School

Bowling Green High School is the district's next priority for construction and renovation. BGHS was built in the early 70s and construction cost $3.2 million. Both current and future construction plans will be based on the District’s bonding potential. In an effort to increase the district's bonding potential, the Bowling Green Independent Board of Education has adopted a General Fund rate of 83.5 cents.  Of this rate, 5.4 cents is subject to recall.

 

BGHS One of Washington Post’s Most Challenging High Schools

The Washington Post has released their annual list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools. The list is calculated and ranked based on the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. According to the index, BGHS is ranked 1,455th in America and 10th in Kentucky.

U.S. News Ranks BGHS among Best High Schools

Bowling Green High School has been named a 2017 U.S. News Best High School.  More than 6,000 schools – one-fourth of the schools that U.S. News evaluated -- were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals in this year’s rankings. BGHS is ranked 1,304 in the nation, 13th in Kentucky and has been awarded a silver medal.

BGHS Hosts Swearing-In Ceremony Tyler Thomas and Jacobie Jackson taking the Oath of enlistment

BGHS students Tyler Thomas and Jacobie Jackson took the Oath of enlistment at Bowling Green High School on April 20, 2017. Both will join the United States Marine Corps upon graduation from high school and completion of basic training.

Five BGHS Sophomores Selected to Attend Gatton Academy

The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky has selected 95 Kentucky sophomores for the Class of 2019, including five from Bowling Green High School! Congratulations to the following students and their families:

  • Annika Avula,daughter of Smita and Pravin Avula;
  • Isabel Chumbler, daughter of Janice Chumbler and Neale Chumbler;
  • Rithik Reddy, son of Chandrasekhar Reddy and Karuna Reddy;
  • Aashka Sheth, daughter of Nirav and Ami Sheth;
  • Anna Strunjas, daughter of Jean Neils-Strunjas and Sasha Strunjas.

BGHS Adding Six to Hall of Honor

Six graduates of Bowling Green High School will be recognized Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the 26th Annual Hall of Honor Dinner. The Hall of Honor was established to recognize the outstanding achievements of Bowling Green High School graduates, distinguished in personal, civic, and professional careers and reflecting the highest values of service, community, and excellence. The Class of 2017 Hall of Honor inductees include Dr. Keely Jones (1988), Derrick Ray (1985), Cathy Meeks Bishop (1974), Dr. Kelly Elliott Kries (1989), John Pipes Gaines (1960), and Brad Odil (1982). Each will be introduced and recognized by Bowling Green Independent Schools Superintendent Gary Fields at the Hall of Honor dinner.

2017-18 Non-Resident Application Deadline: April 15, 2017

Families living in Bowling Green and Warren County but outside the boundaries of the Bowling Green City School District may apply for their children to attend BGISD as non-resident students. An agreement between Warren County Public Schools and Bowling Green City Schools allows state funding per child for up to 690 non-resident students to attend BGISD for the 2017-18 school year. Skillern Inducted to Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame Ron Skillern, Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame 2017

Bowling Green High School teacher, Ron Skillern is now a member of the ninth class of the Governor Louie B. Nunn Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame. Skillern is one of three chosen by the statewide selection committee; the other two individuals chosen include Opal T. Sibert of Laurel County and Joe Westerfield of Daviess County.

As a partner with The Kentucky Center for the Arts, the Bowling Green High School Joseph Tinius LEAD Academy proudly invites the community to the conclusion of the Bearing Witness Project. On March 7, 2017, students will honor the victims, celebrate the survivors, and express our commitment to "Never Again!"  Never again will we be silent; never again will we be bystanders. Whether it is schoolhouse bullying or crimes against humanity, we have learned the power of voice and the devastation of silence. 

2nd Opportunity High School Begins September 5

The Bowling Green City Schools Second Opportunity High School will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Bowling Green High School beginning September 5, for the fall semester. The courses are an opportunity for individuals over 18 years old to complete a high school diploma.

BGHS to Pilot Pre-Apprenticeship IT Program

Bowling Green High School is making plans to offer a pre-apprenticeship program in information technology next year. The pilot program, one of 21 in Kentucky will be provided through Interapt, an award-winning technology firm that focuses on workforce engagement and social impact through technology training and mobile software development.

BGHS Speech wins Regional Championship BGHS Regional Speech Champions 2018

The BGHS Speech Team won its 3rd consecutive KY High School Speech League Regional Championship at Bowling Green Junior High on Saturday.  Twenty Bowling Green High students competed in 14 speech and drama events. 

Hollis Participates in STEM Scholar Program

Jay Hollis of Bowling Green was one of ten middle school science teachers from eight states across the country to participate in the prestigious National STEM Scholar Program, a unique professional development and networking program to provide advanced training for the teachers of aspiring middle school scientists nationwide.

Parents and guardians of students in the Bowling Green Independent School District have the opportunity to complete most “back-to-school” paperwork online. Online registration is provided through Infinite Campus Parent Portal and eliminates the need for paper forms such as the annual enrollment form, school/district field trip permission, release agreements, etc.

Bowling Green High School Head Football Coach Kevin Wallace met with members of the team today, February 5, 2018, to share his intent to resign as coach of the Purples. Wallace has led the Bowling Green team since 1996 with a record of 254-41, including five 5A State Championships (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016).

BGISD to Make Up Days Missed 2017-18 Calendar Edited February 5

BGISD will be in session February 19, March 15, and March 16 to make up days missed for snow.

Each year, Bowling Green High School welcomes hundreds of alumni and friends back to campus to celebrate reunion milestones and the BGISD Foundation, Inc. is available to assist with planning those events. Reunion planners and coordinators from each class should submit a contact form (linked here) to receive information from BGHS specific to group needs.

Winter Weather Communication Two steps to receive text message alerts.

During the winter months, school officials keep a close watch on the weather. If the decision is made to delay or close school, our district will make every effort to notify parents, guardians, employees and the community as soon as possible. With few exceptions, the decision to delay or close school is made by 5:45 a.m., before buses begin morning routes.

New Kentucky Immunization Requirements for 2018-2019 New Immunization Requirement for 2018-2019

An amendment to the Kentucky Administrative Regulation added new immunization requirements beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. Effective July 1, 2018, ALL students in kindergarten through 12th grade must show proof of having received two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine and students 16 or older must show proof of having received two doses of Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) to attend school.
